How to read it
Answers whether the budget balances, not what balanced it. A surplus on a high oil price and a surplus from spending cuts are different events with the same sign, which is why this series is read alongside the non-oil balance rather than on its own.
How it is measured
The headline federal budget balance from Minfin's monthly data, cumulative from January. Unlike the non-oil balance it includes oil and gas revenue.
