How to read it
The closest monthly read on consumer demand. Above 100 means real sales grew against the same month a year earlier. A year-on-year comparison removes seasonality but inherits its base: a weak month a year ago produces a high reading without demand accelerating.
How it is measured
A volume index: turnover at constant prices, with inflation removed. That is why it is used rather than turnover in roubles - a nominal series rises with prices, and in 2022 would have reported the inflation as consumption growth. Covers all trading entities, including markets and fairs.
