How to read it
Real rather than nominal: it accounts for the fact that higher Russian inflation erodes competitiveness even when the nominal rate is unchanged. Depreciation passes into non-food goods prices with a lag of several months.
How it is measured
Change in the real effective exchange rate index - the rouble against a basket of trading partners' currencies, adjusted for inflation differentials. A positive value means the rouble strengthened.
