How to read it

A share, not a total: overdue roubles rise whenever the loan book does, so their level says more about how much has been lent than about how much has gone bad. A falling share may partly reflect the book growing rather than repayment improving - a fast-growing book is mostly loans too young to have defaulted. For example, in July 2023 the share fell 0.20 pp on the year while the amount of overdue roubles rose 12.1 per cent. That is why credit growth is shown beside it.

How it is measured

Household overdue debt divided by household loans outstanding, in per cent. Both sides are the all-currency book: dividing rouble-only arrears by an all-currency stock is a ratio of two different populations that still looks like a percentage. Three decimal places rather than two, because the momentum bands are cut at 0.25 pp against a year earlier and rounding to hundredths can move a reading across a boundary by itself.
