How to read it
Answers where the economy has got to, not where it is going. It is robust to a single quarter's noise but backward-looking, and it is subject to base effects: if the quarter a year earlier was unusual, the annual rate moves without anything changing now. That accounts for part of the swings in 2021 and 2023.
How it is measured
The ratio of real GDP to the same quarter a year earlier: GDP_t / GDP_t-4 - 1. Taken from the seasonally adjusted series, because the unadjusted constant-price level is not among the series we ingest; the comparison spans all four seasons, so four consecutive adjustment factors very nearly cancel.
